Description
No. 19 in G minor and No. 20 in G major
The two piano sonatas op. 49, which appeared as "Sonates faciles", are often the first Beethoven sonatas with which advanced piano students can prove their abilities. The very high opus number is deceptive, because the two two-movement pieces were written at about the same time as the Piano Sonatas op. 10, ie 1796 to 1798. That they actually were printed seven years later is probably thanks to the commercial engagement of Beethoven's brother Carl, who initially offered in vain to several publishers. At last, in 1805, a Viennese publishing house took pity on it - not knowing which treasure had fallen into his hands. For these small masterpieces in a manageable form met with great popularity even then.
