Three Songs Without Words was originally written for solo voice with piano accompaniment. It comprises three movements: "Arioso,"Ballad" and "Sephardic Melody." Each movement evokes a particular mood, with the melodies acting as the driving force of the composition. In this piece, Ben-Haim is able to both create his own melodies in an oriental style, as with the "Arioso" and "Ballad," and to set a pre-existing Sephardic folk tune. Ben-Haim later wrote versions of Songs for various solo instrumentswith piano accompaniment.
