Within the history of art song, the 600+ “lieder” of Franz Schubert stand supreme – though they were often intended purely forperformance in his intimate circle of friends. Schubert arranged &ldquo ;Der Tod und das Madchen” for string quartet (an indication that he was pleased with the song) in 1824. Mr. De Meij has adapted the secondmovement for concert band, where the majestic Death has an even more im pressive appearance in the dark glowing sound of winds.
