Let's Keep the Dream Alive is a collection, short musical and a classroom unit all in one. It is designed to be used by music teachers, classroom teachers, and as cross-curricular resource material. Through songs and short bits of rhyming dialog, it tells of the life and dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Patsy Ford Simms' songs are in a variety of styles, with one incorporating parts of Dr. King's “I Have a Dream” speech and another quoting from “We Shall Overcome.”Reproducible activity sheets offer ways to teach students about the har mful effects of discrimination and segregation and why justice and freedom for everyone is so important. Let's Keep the Dream Alive may be performed as a short musical – consider older students learning and performing it for younger students. It may be used as a classroom unit, especially in conjunction with a social studies unit, preparing for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and Black History Month. Short rhyming parts are available for 15 separate speakers, or double up the speakers' parts if fewer speakers are desired. Individual songs may be performed separately as concert features, or as part of commemorative ceremonies.
